Top stars of volleyball such as those from Brazil and Russia feature at the Olympic Games

Lausanne, 28th November 2006 – In response to claims by the Association of National Olympic Committees ahead of today’s IOC Executive Board session, the FIVB recalls that the qualification process for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball for the Olympic Games were drawn up jointly with the IOC and were approved by the IOC and circulated by the IOC to all NOCs.

Regarding the selection of teams for the Olympic Games, IOC Members appreciate that the FIVB organises and administers its sports in such a way as to guarantee that their very best players from all continents always participate in the Olympic Tournaments. The strong teams fielded in Volleyball and Beach Volleyball have helped them become two of the top spectator and TV sports at the Olympic Games.

The Olympic Charter assigns International Federations as the world governing bodies in their respective sports the responsibility for organising their Olympic Qualification tournaments in agreement with the IOC and it is up to the National Olympic Committees to work with the National Federations of all sports that are on the Olympic Programme, so that all the teams which they enter are in line with the IOC-approved Qualification Processes.
